Microsoft Corp to charge users a fee of $1.50 for downloading Office 2007 Beta 2

Microsoft Corp has announced it will charge users a fee of $1.50 for downloading Office 2007 Beta 2, beginning August 2, 2006.

The company says the fee is an attempt to curb bandwidth costs for downloads, with the Microsoft Office Beta reportedly having been downloaded over three million times since its launch in May 2006.

However, current users of the software will be able to obtain technical refresh or updates free-of-charge.

Reportedly, this is the first time ever that Microsoft will charge for a beta preview software, and according to the company, this is not something planned for on a regular basis.

While users can access the software for free if they want to test drive Beta 2, a download or CD is required in case they want to test the software against their internal systems.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has denied users the right to further download Office 2007 Beta 2 in Australia, saying the program has received an overwhelming response, and that it is full-up now.
