Weather hits travellers

Police are urging motorists in the North Island to take care with extreme weather causing slips and flooding.

Heavy rain has caused large rocks to come loose, fall and block one lane of the Karagahake Gorge between Paeroa and Waihi. In the Coromandel a slip has blocked one lane of the road between Thames and Whitianga. A slip south of Otorohanga has blocked the northbound lane of State Highway Three.

There’s flooding on roads in some parts of the Kaimai Ranges, and on Rotowaro Road in Huntly West.

The weather is hampering flight plans for people planning to fly in the northern North Island. Flights to and from Kaitaia, the Bay of Islands and Tauranga have been cancelled because of the persistent strong wind and heavy rain.
