Largest Flash MP3 Player Unveiled

SanDisk Corporation has unveiled its flash-based MP3 player, “Sansa e280,” featuring an 8GB capacity. The company says this is the world’s largest capacity flash based MP3 player.

An addition to the company’s flagship e200 series, the Sansa e280 supports a microSD expansion slot for expansion of up to 10GB (2,500 songs), along with an optional 2GB microSD card, thus making it, as SanDisk says, the largest capacity flash-based MP3 player on the market.

The 1.7inch x 3.5inch x 0.5inch new MP3 player features a 1.8-inch screen, an open non-proprietary DRM system, photo and video playback, FM radio tuning and recording, built-in microphone, USB 2.0 interface, and up to 20 hours of battery life.

SanDisk also announced lowering of prices for its entire range of Sansa e200 products, including the existing 2GB, 4GB, and 6GB models. The current suggested retail price (SRP) list reads thus: e250 2GB at $139.99, e260 4GB at $179.99, e270 6GB at $219.99, and the new e280 8GB at $249.99.

Commenting on the price reduction, Eric Bone, director – audio/video product marketing, SanDisk, said “SanDisk is once again making it incredibly affordable for consumers to purchase the most feature-rich, high-capacity players on the market at the best possible price. The most costly ingredient in a flash-based MP3 player is the flash memory. Since we make the flash memory, we essentially remove the middleman, and pass that saving directly to the consumer.”

It is believed that with the launch of the Sansa e280, Apple Computer’s iPod Nano now has two rivals, the earlier being Microsoft’s portable media player “Zune” that was announced earlier.
