Ernesto Weakens Over Florida; Hurricane Warnings Are Canceled

Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) — Tropical Storm Ernesto weakened to a depression with winds of 35 miles per hour as it crossed the Florida peninsula, prompting forecasters to cancel a hurricane watch for the Carolina coast.

Ernesto’s center was about 55 miles (88 kilometers) west- southwest of West Palm Beach as of 11 a.m., the National Hurricane Center said. The system, which came ashore before 2 a.m. today in southwestern Miami-Dade County, was moving north at about 10 mph (16 kilometers per hour), the center said.

As much as 10 inches of rain is possible today near the track of the storm, and rain could reach as far north as Delaware by tomorrow, the center said. Flooding will be a concern in North and South Carolina, as well as in Georgia as the storm moves from Florida over the Atlantic and up the coast, the center said.

“We had quite a bit of rain earlier, but it’s slacking off,” forecaster Hugh Cobb said in a phone interview from the hurricane center. “On the back end of the storm there is quite a lot of rain.”

Ernesto lost momentum as Hurricane John gained strength off the Pacific coast of Mexico, reaching Category 4 level with sustained winds of almost 131 mph, the Hurricane Center said. While John isn’t forecast to make landfall, it is expected to bring rain and tropical storm-force winds along the Mexican coast as it passes over the next two days, the center said.
