Fearless captain Jeter leads Yankees to victory
Fearless captain Jeter leads Yankees to victory
By Larry Fine
NEW YORK, Oct 4 (Reuters) – New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter went five-for-five at the plate to help his team win their playoff opener on Tuesday, showing a level of resolve that his manager said epitomised the shortstop’s approach to the game.
“He just seems to relish this atmosphere,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said after watching his shortstop slash two singles, two doubles and his 17th career post-season homer in New York’s 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
“He’s been so big for us for 11 years here. I can’t say I’m surprised.”
Jeter, who has played in the post-season in every one of his seasons with the Yankees, also contributed with his glove, starting a difficult double play to help the Yankees escape a one-out jam with runners on first and third in the third inning.
Torre said Jeter’s accustomed playoff heroics were linked …
Overeating by obese people is like drug addiction
The desire to overeat in obese people is controlled by the same part of the brain that controls cravings for drugs in addicts, according to research. Scientists have found that compulsive eating is regulated by the emotional centres in the brain, leading some people to overeat in an attempt to feel better. Their results were published yesterday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.”This study opens new territory in understanding how the body and brain connect to each other, and how this connection is tied to obesity,” said Gene-Jack Wang of the Center for Translational Neuroimaging at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York. “We were able to simulate the process that takes place when the stomach is full, and for the first time we could see the pathway from the stomach to the brain that turns ‘off’ the brain’s desire to continue eating.”

Dengue Fever Overwhelms New Delhi Hospitals
NEW DELHI, Oct. 3 : The Indian government called an emergency meeting of health officials today Tuesday to try to control an outbreak of dengue fever that has infected about 500 people in northern India, overwhelming Delhi’s hospitals and exposing serious flaws in the public health system.
Delhi authorities were spraying high-risk areas with insecticide to kill the mosquitoes that carry the disease, but as the death toll rose to 14, doctors associations criticized the government for a belated and ineffective response.
There was chaos at Delhi’s leading public hospital, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors were forced to turn away suspected dengue cases because of a scarcity of beds and blood. People were being treated in corridors and in tents erected outside the building, and television reporters filming undercover within the building said the shortage of doctors on the dengue wards was so acute that patients were helping …
Sanctions Won’t Stop North Korea’s Nukes
Stephan Haggard – Over the last two years the Bush administration has had surprising success putting together a sanctions regime against North Korea. But the country’s threat to test a nuclear weapon could leave the U.S. worse off than ever: with a nuclear North Korea perfectly willing to pay the price of hunger and even famine. I’ll tell you first why these sanctions are so efficient, and then why they’re also ineffective.
First, how did the U.S., which trades hardly at all with North Korea, gain such influence over Pyongyang’s international economic relations? Using provisions of the Patriot Act, the Bush administration issued a warning in 2005 that a small Macau bank, Banco Delta Asia, was involved in money-laundering activities. Facing a run on the bank, the Chinese authorities moved swiftly to take it over and close out the North Korean accounts. Some of these were almost certainly funds used by …
‘Rang De…’ to compete in 8 Oscar categories
Mumbai:Rang De Basanti, India’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, will also compete in seven other mainline categories at the 79th Annual Academy Awards to be held in February in Los Angeles.
The other seven categories are: Best Film, Direction, Cinematography, Screenplay, Editing, Art Direction and Sound Design. The film has been directed by Rakeysh Mehra.
“We have also applied in seven mainline categories but our focus will remain in the foreign language category,” a release by the film’s producers UTV, quoting CEO Ronnie Screwvala, said in Mumbai on Sunday.
When asked about the Sanjay Dutt-starrer Lagey Raho Munnabhai also vying for the coveted Oscars he said, “Only one film can be a country’s official entry. Rang De Basanti is India’s official entry. We are not competing against any other Indian film at the Oscars.”

Credit data stolen at Indian call centres, says London daily
London: A leading London daily today claimed that credit card data, along with passport and driving licence numbers, are being stolen from call centres in India and sold to the highest bidder.
“Middlemen are offering bulk packages of tens of thousands of credit card numbers for sale. They even have access to taped telephone conversations in which British customers disclose sensitive security information to call centre staff,” The Sunday Times reported quoting “an investigative” report by Channel 4 to be shown next Thursday.
Last June, an HSBC employee in Bangalore was arrested after 230,000 pounds was stolen from British customers’ accounts. HSBC said the theft in Bangalore was an isolated incident and the new investigation did not highlight any breaches in its security.
“We’ve been running call centres in India for five years and the security record of those centres is equal to or better than the similar centres in any other country …
