Journalism In Sports Introduced The Manipal Institute of Communication

reporterOwing to the increasing interest of media organisations in sports and the need for efficient sports journalists, the Manipal institute of Communication, for the first time in India, has introduced Sports journalism as a main subject in the third semester of their Bachelor Degree course, BA in Journalism and Communication Studies. the subject familiarises the students on everything related to sports from history and importance of sports to sports rules and sports writing and interviewing and helps them widen career options.

“many students of the present generation, specially the media student, seem to be losing interest in sports. And when the students start off in a media organisation as sports reporters, they have to learn everything from square one. so, we want our students to have at least the basic knowledge in sports and not be ignorent.” Saya Dr Burosiva Dasgupta, the director of Manipal Institute of Communication. He added that there is a huge demand for specialised sports journalist in the industry.

The subject will also include sports journalism and detailed rules and regulations of all the international and national sports. Dr MV Kamath, the honorary director of manipal Institute of Communication, has been a sport of his 60-year long career. “The course will now be handled by some reputed members of the Manipal University Sports Council. We are also inviting some sport personalities and sports journalists to give guest lectures on the subjects,” he said.

“The non-availability of books on the subject makes it a bit difficult for us to teach the subject. but we are working on making the course comprehensive and we hope to get the subject perfected in a maximum of three years time,”
