mirzaShe is going where no Indian woman has before, That has been Sania Mirza’s story ever since her ferocious forehand began doing damage in tennis the most competitive and celebrated of woman’s sports. First Indian girl to be ranked in the top 10 of the world juniors, first to win a junior Grand Slam title and the first to break into WTA top 100. Every step Sania has climbed on the step and slippery ladder of professional tennis has been a first.

The impact of Sania success was both instant and intense. Little girls turned out at fancy dressd like Sania, advertising hoardings fearuring the Hyderabadi dotted the landscape in metros and tennis courts around the country saw a steady rise in attendance. The media had a name for it Sania mania. It was not to much the success as the spirit that caught on among Indian youth. Confident, authoritative, outspoken both on and off the court she is no out of the box Indian girl. She is the leader of a new generation of Indian woman athletic, exciting, aggressive, and smart. She shows the way for others to follow.

While she showed remarable patience as a young girl on the move, it’s not a personality trait you would associate with her on and off court.”I can’t wait for my opponent to make a mistake, It’s not the way i play,” Sania says.”I have to take the lead, be aggressive. and go for my shots.” Whenever she has played, from New Delhi to Newyork, Sania has the cushion of a huge and boisterous fan follwing, which has often annoyed opponents.” We are so many of us, we are every where. You just have to get used it ,”Sania said, offering no apologies. The biggest result of Sania’s path breaking carrer, however will never feature on a scoreboard. She told TOI what thrills her most are ” the moments away from tennis, working for the girl child, against female infanticide”.

She added that she was happy to contribute to SACH(Save a Child’s Heart), an organisation she works for, raising funds for children under 12, who need immediate medical attention. It’s in these situations, she said, that brings out the leader in her.
