Conjoined Twins- Separation
First known American Indian conjoined twins, who are from Oklahoma City are now safe and they got separated. The doctor says that “Set of 1 month old girls is doing well and they are separated and the operation is successful”
David Tuggle, surgeon who involved in separation said that “they are very cute and they hold each other now”.
These conjoined twins born on Oct. 25 to Preslee Faith (21-year-old) and Kylee Hope Wells (20-year-old) and twins were joined at the liver and rib cage since birth. The parents have a history of twins in their families.
Doctor said that conjoined twins are rare and occur in about 1 in 600,000 births in Oklahoma. This condition happens soon after conception because of an error in cell division. The weighted combined is 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth, appear to have separate hearts. Doctors want to learn if the girls share the same blood vessels around their hearts before performing the separation operation.
Before pregnant few weeks there was a tissue connection during a routine ultrasound exam done and the babies were born at 34 weeks via Caesarean section. They remained in an intensive care unit at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, where they have been “on and off” breathing machines tests.
Doctor says they need to grow bigger and stronger first and it is good for the surgery to occur before the twins are eight to nine months old, which may help with their psychological development.
The twin’s parents say “their daughter handled the stressful situation, they have great days and off days and are really happy of their beautiful little girl with good healthy life”.
