How ‘an eye for an eye’ has turned noble

by praveen

Many organs can be retrieved with in hours after death and transplanted
The Tamil proverb: ‘Yanai irundalum ayiram pon, irandalum ayiram pon’values the elephant as worth a thoushan gold pieces when alive (working for us) and just as worth in death (the tusk of ivory and other parts). I was reminded of this saying as we celebrate the Eye Donation Fortnight during august 25th september 8.

The fortnight brings home the point that we humans too have value, at least physiological, whether alive or dead.

The Moghul King Babar is reported to have beseeched Allah to take his life, if need be, in order to save his son Humayun from a near-fatal illnesss.

Such sacrfice regularly happens every so often these days when we hear of people donating blood, and even a kidney, part of their lungs, liver of pancreas to save othres.

The human body turns out to be useful to others even after …

Brain scans pinpoint how chocohilics are hooked

by praveen
September 6th, 2007

Chocoholics really do have chocolate on the brain. Their grey matter reacts differently when they see or taste chocolate than people who do not crave the food.

British researchers used brain scans to investigate subconscious reactions to the confection and found that the pleasure centres of chocolate lovers’ brains lit up more strongly in response to the food than those who are less partial.

Viewing pictures

There may also be some truth in calling the love of chocolate an addiction in some people. When cravers viewed pictures of chocolate this activated regions of the brain known to be involved in habit-forming behaviours and drug addiction.

Edmund Rolls and Ciara McCabe at the experimental psychology department at Oxford University U.K., used functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brains of eight chocoholics and eight non-cravers. All the volunteers were women. The technique reveals where activity is happening in the brain.

The volunteers were presented first with …

Dream about positive things

by satish
September 3rd, 2007

Dreams are what keep us going when the pathways of life are full of obstacles. It is dreams that act as catalysts for our drive and future successes. Dreams are made much before successes are ever realised. We should understand that success never happens by accident. We accomplish, we pursue, we become as a result of what we have dream of becoming. Do you know what your own personal dreams are? Do you have a plan? A direction that you are aiming at what is your correct goal. Without written plans, without a map to follow, we may go at a lightening speed, but we will not know where we are going, or when we will ultimately end up. Successful people begin their journey with big dreams about life. The rest of things will take care of themselves to bring name and fame to them. There you are. Now …

Arkansas education officials pledge to help English-learners

by editor3
August 3rd, 2006

The Arkansas Department of Education has submitted a plan to federal education officials that outlines how it will improve the state’s testing system by the end of the 2006-2007 school year.

A month ago, the U.S. Department of Education said Arkansas’ assessment tests for public school students are too easy and missing fundamental components. The state was required to submit an improvement plan by the end of July, or be subject to financial penalties.

One issue at the center of the debate over improved testing in Arkansas and many other states is better assessments of students with limited English proficiency. Julie Thompson with the Arkansas Department of Education says the plan they have submitted pledges to do away with the current system of testing, which has those students complete something called a portfolio assessment rather than take the Benchmark exam that other students are taking.

“It wasn’t comparable to the …
