A journey of emotions from Tulasi

by laxman
October 13th, 2007

Director Boyapati Srinu armed with a tight script begins his narration by introducing his main actors a married couple and then goes on to hold the story together with a series of flash backs that has a heady mix of emotions and violence.

Overall it becomes a predictable film by interval but the director knack for finding the honesty in small moments aided it in brining general believability to the flick. The acting by the ensemble cast, the little boy included, salvages the movie and venkatesh as Tulasi gets to show his range explosive anger and wilting fear in the hospital scenes whilst losing his son.

Hurricane Florence churns past Bermuda; thousands left without power

by admin
September 11th, 2006

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) – Hurricane Florence blew out windows, peeled away the roofs of at least three houses and knocked out power to thousands in Bermuda on Monday before churning past the wealthy British island chain and heading out over open ocean.

As the whirling eye of the storm travelled away from the archipelago of tiny islands, the lashing winds and sea water surge that threatened the islands were reducing in intensity by late afternoon. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.

But many tourists remained hunkered down inside resort hotels and officials urged all islanders to stay at home until the second hurricane of the Atlantic season no longer posed a danger. Tropical-storm-force winds and strong bands of rain were expected to affect the British territory until Monday evening, local forecasters said.

“The storm has passed its closest point of approach. It looks like the worst is over,” …

Tropical storm threatens Bermuda

by editor2
September 10th, 2006

Bermuda braced itself for a potential hurricane last night as tropical storm Florence picked up strength and headed towards the North Atlantic island.

By yesterday evening, Florence was around 500 miles south of Bermuda and moving north-west at about 13 mph.

With gusts reaching up to 70 mph, forecasters warned that Florence could become a hurricane as it nears Bermuda, and the island’s government urged its 65,000 residents to take precautions.

“The public is encouraged to stock up on normal hurricane supplies and to secure their homes, lawn furniture and any other loose items which could be affected by high winds,” said Derrick Burgess, the island’s minister of public safety.

Yesterday, islanders hurried to install storm shutters on their houses and haul yachts on to beaches. The island’s only airport was boarded up and is not expected to re-open until Tuesday.

One local, mechanic Paul Henderson, 53, recalled 1987’s devastating Hurricane Emily as he stocked …

Florida braces for hurricane as storm claims life in Haiti

by editor2
August 29th, 2006

Florida was bracing itself for the season’s first hurricane after Cuba took a battering from furious winds and torrential rain.Tropical storm Ernesto is expected to turn into a category 2 hurricane with winds in excess of 74mph as it crosses the warm waters of the Florida Straits, setting its sights on landfall later today anywhere from Key West to Miami.

Residents in the south of the state went through the familiar routine of boarding up windows and stocking up on water and food as they prepared for the eighth hurricane strike in Florida in two years. “It certainly looks like it’s going to impact a significant portion of Florida before it’s all over,” said Max Mayfield, director of the national hurricane centre in Miami.

Jeb Bush, Florida’s governor, declared a state of emergency for the entire state. “It sounds like a broken record, but if families fortify their homes and shelter in …

India Day parade graced with superb weather

by editor2
August 16th, 2006

Sunday’s India Day Parade drew tens of thousands of participants and spectators, parade organizers said.”We think there were anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 people, including people watching on the sidelines, those participating in it, as well as the many people waiting at the parade’s end,” said Mahesh Shah, the president of the Indian Business Association. “We had more people than last year, and the good weather helped us a lot.”

The parade, now in its third year, is an annual event held to celebrate India’s independence from British rule in 1947.

For the past two years, it has been organized by the IBA, an organization representing a number of businesses along Oak Tree Road.

Shah was still out on the parade route overseeing the clean-up at 10 p.m. on Sunday night. At that point, he planned to keep working until at least 1 a.m.

“I will go around …

Cool Weather, But Forest Fire Threats.

by editor2
August 11th, 2006

Southern British Columbia may be experiencing cooler, damp weather but the Forest Service says the fire danger remains high to extreme in the region. It is once again warning people to be careful in the woods, pointing out that two-thirds of the fires started on the B.C. Day long weekend were caused by humans.

Meanwhile, the Mount McPherson fire just west of Revelstoke has been stirred up by the wind but remains 95 per cent contained, officials said yesterday. The Helmer Lake fire near Merritt is now considered 100 per cent contained. CP

Gujarat Floods : 300 Die and 4.5 Million Flee

by editor2
August 10th, 2006

AHMEDABAD, India, Aug. 9 (Reuters) — Swollen rivers swamped thousands of villages and towns across southern and western India on Wednesday, forcing 4.5 million people from their homes as rescuers struggled to bring them food and drinking water, officials said.

India’s annual monsoon rains — vital for its agriculture-driven economy — have caused flooding across at least five states in the last several days, killing more than 300 people, inundating villages and causing widespread damage to crops.

Most deaths were reported from Maharashtra, a western state where incessant rain over four days has killed 163 people, 86 of them in the last 48 hours, officials said.

Floods forced more than 200,000 people from their homes in nearly 3,500 villages in Maharashtra, a relief official said.

In Maharashtra and neighboring Gujarat State, military boats and helicopters continued to reach out to thousands of people who remained marooned on trees and rooftops, many without food and …

Toll increases to 180 in Maharastra after Rains

by editor2
August 10th, 2006

Nearly 180 people have died so far in rain-related deaths in Maharashtra in western-central India this year with fears that the tally may go up as the monsoon fury continued unabated in the country’s most industrialized state.

Several parts of the state received heavy downpour and tens of thousands of people were shifted to safe places by authorities.

According to government officials, over 250,000 people have been dislocated in 22 districts of the state in the past week.

Two Indian Army helicopters were in operation in Nashik to carry out rescue operations, Indo-Asian News Service quoted Brigadier P.B. Charak, director general (operations), Southern Command, as saying.

The army had at its disposal 20 helicopters to carry out relief operations in the flood-hit states within the jurisdiction of the Southern Command, Charak said.

According to the state government’s preliminary estimates, over 250,000 hectares of agricultural land was marooned, posing a serious threat for the standing crops.

North Korea Seeks South Korea Help

by editor2
August 9th, 2006

A South Korean citizens group says North Korea is seeking aid to repair damage from devastating floods.

Wednesday, a South Korean committee working for Korean reconciliation said a North Korean counterpart group has requested food, blankets, medical supplies, construction materials and machinery.

The faxed message is believed to be North Korea’s first formal request for help in recovering from the floods.

Pyongyang initially turned down aid offers from foreign relief agencies.

A South Korean aid group has said that as many as 10,000 people are dead or missing after heavy rains caused floods and landslides in North Korea last month. North Korea’s government has placed the death toll lower, in the hundreds.

The storms also destroyed vital crops, raising concerns the impoverished country could face famine.

South Korea stopped aid donations to the North last month after North Korean delegates walked out of high-level talks, refusing to address concerns about Pyongyang’s missile program.

Death Toll in Andhra above 100 and 70 in Maharastra

by editor2
August 9th, 2006

The rain gods seemed to be in no mood to calm down, not even after floods in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat affected nearly 33 lakh people. Rain alerts were sounded in Maharashtra’s Marathwada and Vidarbha regions after 70 people died in rain-related incidents over the past three days.

Gujarat evacuation

More than 1.90 lakh people were evacuated from different parts of south Gujarat as major rivers flowed above the danger mark. Sixty per cent of Surat is submerged and the situation is expected to worsen as the administration had released over 10 lakh cusecs of water from Ukai dam.

Oil production hit

Operations of the state-run ONGC, GAIL India and corporate giant Reliance Industries have been severely hit in Maharashtra. Some plants have been shut down temporarily. ONGC has shut down its wells after its facilities were inundated by up to 10 feet of water, affecting gas supplies and crude production.

Power problem in Gujarat after Floods

by editor2
August 9th, 2006

NEW DELHI: Floods in Gujarat have worsened the ongoing power crisis in parts of north India, including Delhi. The HVJ pipeline — which starts from gas-fields in Gujarat, like Hazira, and feeds power plants in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and north India — has stopped getting supply from its main source point, ONGC Complex at Hazira in Gujarat.

In face of a major shortage of gas supply, north India alone reported 1,000 MW loss in generation at gas plants. Delhi’s 330 MW Pragati Power Station had zero generation on Tuesday, according to the Load Despatch Centre.

The combined capacity of two gas plants here — Pragati and Gas Turbine — is 575 MW and on Tuesday the generation was down to just 70 MW.

While Delhi, and other states, had been facing …

Natural Gas Prices Higher Due to Sticky Weather

by editor2
August 9th, 2006

Natural gas prices rose Tuesday after an 11 percent decline over the past three sessions on expectations that hot weather last week had forced utilities to take the rare step of tapping underground storage caverns.

U.S. natural gas stockpiles may have declined as sweltering weather led to increased use of air-conditioners and more gas consumption by electric generators. Stockpiles typically expand during summer in an effort to bulk up for winter, when demand peaks.

“There’s concern that Thursday’s EIA report could be another bullish report after last week’s heat wave,” said Brad Florer, a broker at ICAP Energy in Louisville, Kentucky, referring to a report on supplies from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Gas for September delivery gained 25.1 cents to $7.16 per million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gas inventories may have dropped last week for the second time ever in …
