Hindu council to contest ban on Yoga

A leading Hindu organisation in Britain is planning to challenge the ban on yoga classes imposed by two churches on the ground that it breaches the country’s Equality Act 2006. Last week, priests at the Silver Street Bapist Church and St. James’ Church of England Taunton, Somerset, banned yoga classes for children by branding it as ’sham’ and ‘un-Christian’. Now, the Hindu Council of UK (HCUK) is actively considering challenging the ban. Lawyers of the organisation are exploring whether the comments by the churches indicate that the priests acted contrary to Britain’s ‘religion and belief’ section of the Equality Act 2006.

The act makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of religion or belief in the provision of goods, facilities and services and the management of premises. HCUK will also ask the panel for equality and human rights, its general secretary Anil Bhanot said.

Bhakti Yoga, Agni yoga, Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Mantra Yoga the list goes on and on. for most indians, the practice of yoga has almost become a way of life. A healthier life. Ahealtheier life. Yet, two churches in Britain have recently benned a group from conducting yoga classes,terming the ancient practice as ‘un-Christian’ and a ’sham’.

Even though the practice did orginate in India centuries ago the word ‘yoga‘ is derived from the sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means to ‘unite’ the union being that of the individual with the Universal Spirit, or God). UK churches ban yoga group

masterAt a time when Indian Yoga camps are spreading far and widein Britain, two churches here have banned a group from conducting yoga classes because the ancient practice is llegedly “un-Christian”The yoga class for children was to be run by Louise Woodstock at the Silver street Bapist Chruch and St James church of England in Taunton. Somerset. But church ministers this week banned it and branded yoga as a “sham and “Un=Christian”.

Woodstock, Who was turned away from the churches on Thursday, said the allegations against yoga were “ridiculous” because her classes simply involve music and movement. She was told that yoga “impinges” on the spiritual agenda of the churches. Baba Ramdev’s camps have been held in several places across Britian, most recently in Scotland.
